Symposium & Patient Day in South Africa

The Unraveling Mysteries of Heme Metabolism (UMHM) symposium, was held in Cape Town, South Africa, April 17-21, 2023. The symposium brought together "an outstanding and diverse cadre of life scientists to interact and brainstorm on new discoveries, ideas and directions in basic, clinical, and applied research on heme biology and porphyria.”

Highlights from the event included:

  • Presentations of novel research in heme and in the porphyrias by outstanding biochemists and foundational scientists.
  • The first ever South African Patient Day held on April 20th, with more than 80 attendees! The event was chaired by United Porphyrias and featured the South African Porphyria Foundation lead, Aletta Longari. Patients learned about porphyrias from a team of international experts and networked with one another in-person.
  • A Porphyria Update session targeted to emerging healthcare scientists and professionals in South Africa

With a focus on recent research findings in heme biosynthesis and advances in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of the porphyrias, The International Porphyrias Symposium 2023 will be held October 26-29, 2023, in Bethesda, Maryland. The program will feature US and international experts who will describe the clinical manifestations of each porphyria and the latest advances in their diagnosis, management, and treatment, including newly approved and emerging therapies.
